Knee Anatomy

The knee is an important joint in the body that bears stress from everyday activities such as walking, bending, twisting, standing, and lifting and high-impact activities like aerobics, jogging, exercise and sports. The knee consists of three parts namely; Tibia, Femur and Patella and the knee is held together by muscles, ligaments and tendons.

What Causes Knee Pain?

Major causes of knee pain can be categorized into three parts – Overuse Injuries and Arthritis. Some of the most common causes of knee pain related to overuse and arthritis are discussed first.

Patellofemoral Pain

Knee pain due to this condition generally occurs while performing different functions such as running, cycling, flexing knees or climbing stairs. It affects children as well as young adults and cause pain under or around the kneecap.

Osgood-Schlatter’s Disease

This condition also affects children as well as young people. The shinbone below the kneecap generally swells up and causes pain due to overuse during and after exercise.

Tendonitis

Tendonitis is caused when tendons on the knee swell and cause pain. Sports persons who play basketball and volleyball often experience sore and painful knees, which is a clear indication of being affected by tendonitis.

Arthritis

Arthritis is a condition that causes inflammation and pain in the different joints of the body, and one of them is the knee. It commonly affects people as they age. There are primarily two types of arthritis that affect the knee: Rheumatoid Arthritis and Osteoarthritis.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

It is believed to be an auto-immune disorder that causes inflammation of tissues around the knee joint. Chronic inflammation often damages cartilage and breaks them eventually. Some key symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis include stiffness, pain, swelling and difficulty in bending the knee.

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is defined as a form of arthritis in which progressive wearing of cartilage occurs in the knee joint. As the cartilage deteriorates, one bone rubs against another, causing excessive pain. Some symptoms are pain, stiffness, swelling, tenderness, deformity, weakness, and limited motion.

Worst Type of Knee Pain & Injury

Due to the complex nature of the knee joint, it is vulnerable to different types of injuries. Some of the common knee injuries are listed below.

1-Fractures
2-Dislocations
3-Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injuries
4-Posterior Cruciate Ligament Injuries
5-Collateral Ligament Injuries
6-Meniscal Tears
7-Tendon Tears

Knee ligament injuries are caused by traumatic events such as accidents and sports activities. And according to experts, Anterior Cruciate Ligament is possibly the worst ligament in the knee to tear and thus the worst type of knee injury. ACL performs the function of providing stability to the knee. The knee becomes unstable when the ACL tears or gets damaged. Knee ligament surgery can however fix the problem.

Symptoms

Besides pain, there are several symptoms that indicate knee problem such as:

1- Swelling
2- Redness
3- Warm
4- Locking of joint
5- Walking difficulty
6- Instability
7- Knee unable to bear the burden
8- Popping sound in the knee

Knee Pain Solution

A thorough examination is usually required to determine the exact cause of knee pain. Sometimes it is possible that pain in the knee is the result of injury in other parts of the body such as the hip.

The doctor will investigate the case by understanding the patient history, conducting a complete physical examination of the patient and advising imaging, scans and other tests. In addition, the doctor will ascertain if any condition such as osteoarthritis, obesity or athletic activity is causing the knee pain.

As far as treatment is concerned, the doctor may suggest the following knee pain solutions depending on the nature of the injury or condition affecting the knee:

1- Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation or RICE is often recommended by doctors in case of acute knee pain.

2- Exercise and Physical Therapy Sessions are suggested when the patient needs to build or stretch muscles in order to ease knee pain.

3- Maintaining proper weight to avoid stress on the knee and limiting activities such as running which exerts excessive pressure is also advised in certain cases.

4- Medication is given to the patient as a remedy.

5- Surgery is not the first option. But when the other treatment options do not provide sufficient relief, surgery may be recommended. It is primarily used to correct structural damage. Several surgical treatment methods are used such as Partial Knee Replacement Surgery, Total Knee Replacement, and Arthroscopic Surgery.
