What is Cerebral palsy?

Cerebral palsy is one the most common cause of childhood disability. It refers to a group of neurological disorders which cause delayed development (predominantly motor issues). It is caused due to insult to the developing brain either in-utero, at the time of birth or within the first two years of life.

What is the importance of Early Intervention in Cerebral Palsy?

Brain damage in Cerebral Palsy is not progressive. However, if not intervened early it may lead to severe secondary and tertiary complications in the form of spasticity, joint contracture, bony deformities and joint dislocations.

Early intervention prevents complications and facilitates the child’s participation in activities at home/school and social environment. However, each child with cerebral palsy has a different set of problems and hence the treatment plan needs to be individualized for each child.

What is the Comprehensive Cerebral Palsy Clinic and what does it offer?

The Comprehensive Cerebral Palsy Clinic at Pinnacle orthocentre Hospital is a highly specialized clinic dedicated to the management of musculoskeletal problems in children with Cerebral Palsy. In this clinic, children with Cerebral Palsy are jointly evaluated by our highly specialized team of Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeons, Pediatric Physiotherapists and Orthotists.

After a detailed evaluation, parents are guided with the individualized treatment plan for their child right from the time of diagnosis to the various treatments/ therapies needed over time.

What treatments are offered to children at the Comprehensive Clinic?

All aspects of care for musculoskeletal problems in children with Cerebral Palsy are addressed to overcome the child’s functional limitations and improve their activity participation. Treatment includes:

1- Physiotherapy includes a Neurodevelopmental and sensory integration approach. (For children undergoing therapy at outside centres, therapy protocol is prescribed after detailed consultation with the treating therapist to ensure that the entire team managing the child is in complete agreement).

2- Prescription and fabrication of appropriate splints.

3- Injection of Botulinum Toxin for spasticity.

4- Surgery for joint contractures, deformity correction, hip displacement and upper limb.

What are the advantages of the Comprehensive Cerebral Palsy clinic?

1- All specialists are available under the same roof at the same time, so parents save the time of booking separate appointments and travelling.

2- The family can understand the treatment better and can manage the child better. All queries are resolved at the same time.

3- No communication gap between various specialists or between specialists and parents.

4- All specialists evaluate the child at the same time – no delay in decision-making concerning medications/ therapy/ orthotics/ surgery

5- Regular follow-ups ensure that the child can function optimally as the treatment focus changes gradually as the child grows older.

6- Objective evaluation of change in the child’s functional status is done by periodic evaluation of validated scores such as the Edinburgh Visual Gait Score (EVGS) and SHUEE score (for upper limb function). The record of the child’s journey is maintained and available for review later.
