What is Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury?

March 2, 2023

What is Anterior Cruciate Ligament? How it is treated?

The knee joint is made up of four ligaments, a ligament on each side of the knee and two inside the knee. Two ligaments inside the knee crossing each other are known as the anterior cruciate ligament.

The main function of a ligament is to hold the bones together and supports motion and movement. ACL mainly helps in forward movement and controls how much the tibia can slide relative to the femur.

Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) is one of the most common injuries of the knee. Sportspersons, especially those playing football and basketball, are likely to injure ACL. It occurs due to various factors such as sudden pivoting, work or accidents. One of the main signs of ACL is a pop or snap sound when an injury occurs.

If you have experienced an ACL injury, surgical and non-surgical treatment will be required depending on the severity of the condition. However, you must always consult a doctor before deciding on surgery. Pinnacle Orthocentre is one of the leading, trusted and well-known hospitals for knee joint problems.

ACL Injury Causes

Studies carried out in the past have shown that women are more prone to ACL injuries compared to men. This can be due to several factors such as physical structure, muscular characteristics and neuromuscular strength and control. Experts also suggest the difference in low extremity properties, ligament looseness and the possible effect of estrogen on the ligament.

Some of the major causes of ACL injuries are:

1- Sudden changing of direction.

2- Sudden stop while walking or running.

3- Sudden slowing down while running.

4- Jumping and landing incorrectly.

5- Direct contact.

6- Collision.

ACL Injury Symptoms

Popping noise is a major symptom. Besides, you may also experience other symptoms such as:

1-Instability

2-Pain

3-Swelling

4-Loss of motion

5-Tenderness

6-Discomfort

ACL Injury Diagnosis and Treatment

ACL injury is often diagnosed by doctors who will conduct a thorough investigation of your condition. It will include a physical examination and medical history. The doctor will check the motion of the structure and if it is torn or not. In addition, the doctor will rule out any other possible condition that might be causing knee pain.

An X-ray or MRI scan will be recommended to better assess the fracture or injury. Once the severity of the injury is determined, the appropriate treatment plan will be devised for different patients.

Treatment for ACL injuries will vary from one patient to another. For instance, a young athlete with an ACL injury would require surgery to gain full fitness and return back to the sport. However, it is quite different for a less active adult or elderly patient, who can do without surgery.

Non-surgical ACL treatment usually involves physical therapy, immobilization, and a gradual recovery plan. It is most suitable for Grade 1 ACL injury. Surgery may be required for Grades 3 and above.

Partial ACL tear treatment also involves rest, ice, compression and elevation. Only diagnosis under the guidance of an expert doctor can determine the treatment approach.

ACL Injury Recovery Time

Ligaments getting injured are often considered sprains. They are categorized into different grades. Depending on the grade, recovery time will be different. For example, Grade 1 will take 2 to 4 weeks for recovery whereas Grade 2 ACL tear recovery time will be around 8 weeks.

However, it is important to note that returning back to sports may take longer. At about 14 to 16 weeks, athletes can gradually get back to specific physical activities as part of the rehabilitation program. Typically, athletes can gain full fitness in six to nine months.

Following the doctor’s guidance is necessary to avoid possible complications such as infection, stiffness, blood clot etc.
